I belong to a group of artists called P.A.N. (Project Art for Nature). The large group of 20 some artists is divided into smaller "pods." There are 4 people in the pod I'm in. We are supposed to make nature related art at a site of our own selection over a two-year period. We are also supposed to visit the sites of pod members and make art. On this day our pod was visiting the site of one of my pod members: Maplewood Nature Center. We walked outside and did a little sketching around the lake in the rain, but then came in. I sketched from taxidermy. The gosling's body got rather distorted because I was still cold and clutching my sketchbook. The female Pileated Woodpecker is one of those "serendipity" moments, the red of the page going through the red of her feathers.

See the gouache painting of the woodpecker I did using this sketch for a reference. Or return to the woodpecker painting if you were viewing my paintings section.

See the carving of the woodpecker I did using this sketch for a reference. Or return to the carving if you were viewing my paintings section.
