After finishing the previous painting I thought it might be useful to paint a killdeer, taking time to fix that forehead which was bothering me. I got out some old sketches of killdeers and did this painting. It is actually a pen sketch that I've colored with gouache.
I used a sheet of Fredrix Watercolor Canvas. Using a dip pen and Zimmer acrylic ink (brown) I did the line work of the bird. I had great fun distressing the entire thing with splatters of ink made by catching the nib deliberately in the texture of the fabric. The canvas is 20 x 16 inches so the bird actually ends up a bit larger than lifesize; which is what is happening to most of my birds these days. When the ink was dry I added the color with washes of gouache. See a detail from this painting. |
