I currently seem incapable of painting on a white surface. This page is the final page spread from a just completed journal that measures 8 1/2 inches square. The spread stretches 16 inches across. Weeks ago I put left over ink all over the page, didn't like the effect and so made circle masks and covered most of the page with gesso. Around that time I also purchased a new copper ink pad. For some reason I felt I needed to stencil "cantankerous" across the bottom of the page in iridescent blue stamp ink. And then I forgot about the whole mess, because I wasn't there yet!
On May 18th, with only this spread left in my journal and my new journal still unused, I thought about the next painting I wanted to make and sketched it on my yellow pad. As the day went on I decided I should do a study of the gull I wanted to paint. One thing led to another and it all ended up in the journal. (I hope to do the painting next week, but who knows if I'll be able to cope with the 22 x 30 inch sheet of white paper!) The gull is a ring-billed gull, which we have a lot of around here. I used gouache. My color theory students will be interested to know that I used Titanium white (I wanted the opacity for the sunlight reflections; M. Graham). All the other colors in the beak and body are made using Burnt Sienna (M. Graham) and Indigo (Schmincke) except for the yellow and red eye, which uses Azo Yellow, Yellow Ochre (both M. Graham), and Purple Magenta (Schmincke). See a detail of the Gull's head. Return to the gull painting, if you arrived at this page while browsing my artworks section. Or go to the next journal page. |
