This sleeping male lion was drawing crowds at the Como Zoo. A warming trend (which vanished the next day) brought families, a drawing class from the local art college, and groups of teenagers interested in diversion. It's hard to look at this powerful animal when he sleeps and not see his strength and beauty. It's also easy to see the links with domestic cats. But what struck me immediately was the way the front tuft of his mane stood out just like the illustrations of the Cowardly Lion in Baum's Wizard of Oz.
