bookbinding

This is my State Fair 2007 journal. I took 5 x 7 inch journal cards made of 300 lb. Fabriano Artistico Hot Press watercolor paper and prepainted the backgrounds. When the Fair was over I created title cards using rubberstamps, and a colophon card. I created a portfolio with binders board and a black and white bookcloth. There is a grosgrain ribbon tie at the fore edge. The interior of the portfolio is a four flap packet that folds in to contain the loose cards.

Typically I work with pen and ink and then apply watercolor washes. While I had my watercolors with me each visit to the Fair this year, I found that after the first two sketches on the first day I was not getting my watercolors out. I decided to continue in this vein for the entire project. Working in pen and ink only allowed me to work much more quickly as there was no drying time before moving on to the next subject. I admit that the drying time is useful for viewing time before starting the next sketch, but I found the ink only approach delightfully uncomplicated for this year. Who knows what I will decide next year.

Check out the Bird-A-Day-for-30-Days Project in the Paintings section of my website to see several of these journal cards turned into paintings.
