Everybody knows I love birds. On this afternoon I went into town to try and sketch some gulls (herring gulls are very plentiful here as well as other types).

Gulls are quick to learn the flow of opportunities that man presents. They beg an unhealthy diet of donuts from customers of the local donut shop but the shop only makes so many donuts and when they are gone they are gone. The birds have this timed. I found that the gulls and geese were all bedding down for the night.

Disappointed that there were no birds moving around I spotted this guy just landing on a chimney behind the donut shop. I sketched and painted quickly until a light rain started (you can see the drops in the paint).

Let me just add, donuts might not be good for gulls, but they are a perfectly wonderful part of my diet! If you visit Grand Marais you must try the raised glazed donuts at "the World's Best Donuts." But go during the summer months, they close in the fall!
