At the end of 2007 I was playing with my Schmincke watercolors and wanted to do a lot of test swatches. I had a journal made with Arches 140 lb. Cold Press Watercolor that I made as a demo book in 2001. I'd never used this journal because the landscape format makes it too cumbersome for me (it's 11 inches wide). Also I don't use Arches Watercolor paper in journals because I find that it cracks even when you fold it with the grain. It's lovely to paint on but I just don't like to bind with it. I only made two journals like this and one was given years ago to a friend who didn't mind the landscape orientation.
For test purposes, however, this was the perfect book, so I got it out and went to work. Most of the pages are blots of paint mixed with other paint, in an orderly but not tidy fashion. Here's one of the painting pages from the volume. I did a brush sketch with translucent (or is it transparent?) orange (one of my favorite Schmincke paints), and then worked with other colors to capture this pickle. The cold press texture was quite fun for me, since normally I work on hot press paper. |
