I'm still at the button exhibit. After painting the cabinet overview, I stepped in and started painting some of my favorite buttons. I also collect buttons to use in my jewelry. It was interesting to see such a well documented collection. Besides the large canvas cloth on which the buttons were sewn and numbered (something that was evidently a common practice; the collection also had commercially made collector cards) the collector also kept a small record book with corresponding numbers that listed the name and location of the button donor. There's a lot of social history there in this social networking. Additionally the fashion of buttons is a mirror of the taste and attitude towards decoration and function in the society; and a record of materials and manufacturing methods.
